Can I put my jewellery in the water?
Basically, all jewellery should be taken off before showering and bathing and also before sleeping. It is also important to protect jewellery from cosmetics and skin perspiration as much as possible. To do this, only put on the jewellery a few minutes after putting on lotion or perfume and take it off, for example, during sporting activities.
When you are not wearing your jewellery, it is best to keep it dry and protected from light in a small bag or the jewellery box provided.
What does anodised aluminium mean?
The pieces of jewellery made of aluminium are all anodised.
The anodising process (from Eloxal, abbreviation for electrolytic oxidation of aluminium) is a method of surface technology for creating an oxidic protective layer on aluminium through anodic oxidation. In contrast to the galvanic coating processes, the protective layer is not deposited on the workpiece, but an oxide or hydroxide is formed by converting the uppermost metal layer. A 5 to 25 micrometre thin layer is created, which protects deeper layers from corrosion as long as there are no cracks or gaps in this layer. The natural (atmospheric) oxide layer of aluminium is only a few nanometres thick. In addition to chemical resistance, anodising also increases the hardness of the surface and reduces the friction values when in contact with different materials. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eloxal-Verfahren
Is the gold-coloured aluminium jewellery gold-plated?
No, the pieces are not gold-plated, but are dyed gold.
By nature, the aluminium is silver-coloured. The pieces can be dyed in various colours during an intermediate step. Colour pigments settle into the porous surface before it is sealed. Because the colour is in the surface and under the seal, it is resistant to abrasion.
How durable is silver jewellery?
All silver jewellery made by Sofia Beilharz is made of 925 sterling silver.
How durable is gold plated silver jewellery?
Sofia Beilharz’s gold-plated silver jewellery is “gold-plated” using an electroplating process with two different layer thicknesses. This is indicated in micrometre µm. So necklaces and earrings are plated with at least 2-3 µm and rings and bangles with 5µm. Sometimes rings are also coated with 10 µm, as they are exposed to a completely different stress than an earring, for example, which hangs more or less freely in the air and is therefore not exposed to such strong mechanical abrasion.
Basically, a galvanic gold plating can never be of infinite duration and durability, as the gold plating wears off through wearing the jewellery. For this reason, no guarantee can be given, as the change in the surface is strongly dependent on the frequency of wear and stress and varies from person to person.
Cleaning, care and storage of jewellery
What do I have to pay attention to with aluminium jewellery?
If, despite careful handling, the silicone cord should ever break, please feel free to contact me and we will repair your favourite piece. What do I have to pay attention to with silver jewellery?
Despite a thin layer of fine silver on the surface of the jewellery, silver jewellery is susceptible to discolouration. Yellowish or brown spots can appear, and even severe black discolouration can occur. This is either a reaction with the oxygen in the air, body perspiration or also with the cosmetics used. In addition, some people tarnish their jewellery more quickly than others. Reactions may also be caused by medications that are excreted through the skin and cause the jewellery to tarnish. All this is not unusual and therefore no reason to worry. Special cleaning baths dissolve the discolouration so that your jewellery shines again in its usual brilliance. Either go to a jewellery shop or jeweller you trust, or get a silver cleaning bath from the drugstore. What should I pay attention to with gold-plated silver jewellery?
>Sofia Beilharz’s gold plated silver jewellery is 18ct gold plated. As the gold plating is also an alloy, the jewellery can sometimes tarnish. Here too, discolouration can be easily removed by immersion in a jewellery bath.
Repairs and ring sizing
What about repairs?
If, despite careful handling, your piece of Sofia Beilharz jewellery is broken or damaged, please feel free to contact me and I will check the damage and the possibility of repair on an individual basis.
How do I determine a ring size?
If you do not know your ring size anyway, there are various ways to determine it. For example, you can determine it by measuring the exact inside diameter of a matching ring. See the comparison chart. However, it is best to go to a jewellery shop or, if possible, come to my studio. For very delicate rings, such as the small ball or dot rings, you should go for a smaller size, for very wide rings you should go for a larger size. With wide rings, much more skin is displaced, which in most cases makes at least a size difference. If you are unsure, feel free to contact me and I will help you find a solution.
